About the Role: Kitchen Assistant and Driver
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated individual to join our team as a Kitchen Assistant and Driver for our Community Meal Program. As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of our kitchen and meal delivery services. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about working in a fast-paced environment, is comfortable with driving, and has a strong commitment to providing excellent customer service.
Key Responsibilities:
- Drive agency vehicles to specified locations, including meal delivery sites, supply pick-up points, and other destinations as assigned by your supervisor
- Perform routine vehicle maintenance tasks, such as cleaning, checking oil and fluid levels, and reporting any issues to your supervisor
- Assist in food preparation, handling, and packaging under the direction of the head cook, ensuring that all meals are prepared and delivered safely and efficiently
- Maintain accurate records of food usage, inventory, and vehicle maintenance, and assist with monthly inventory taking
- Provide support to the Pantry program, including receiving, delivering, and distributing food and other essential items
- Attend relevant training sessions, both internally and externally, to enhance your skills and knowledge
- Perform additional duties as assigned, demonstrating your flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing circumstances
Essential Qualifications:
To be considered for this role, you must possess:
- A valid driver's license from the state in which you reside, with no reported traffic violations in the past 18 months and no more than 3 points on your license in the last 3 years
- At least 2 years of driving experience, including experience with vans and oversized vehicles
- High School Diploma or equivalent, although not essential, is preferred
- A NYC Food Protection Certificate is desirable, although not mandatory
Preferred Qualifications:
While not essential, the following qualifications and skills are highly desirable:
- Experience working in a kitchen environment, either in a paid or voluntary capacity
- Knowledge of food safety and handling procedures
- Ability to read maps and navigate the New York City highway system with ease
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues, clients, and external stakeholders
Skills and Competencies:
To succeed in this role, you must possess:
- Good verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels
- Physical stamina, with the ability to lift, pull, push, and/or move a minimum of 60 pounds
- Ability to stand, walk, crouch, or sit for long periods, with the capacity to climb five flights of stairs if necessary
- Ability to bend and retrieve objects and/or documents, with good manual dexterity
- Ability to travel throughout the boroughs of New York City and adjacent counties via public transportation
