Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and skilled General Laborer to join our team in Remote, AK - UIC Nappairit. As a General Laborer, you will perform tasks involving physical labor at construction sites, including cleaning and preparing sites, digging trenches, setting braces to support the sides of excavations, assisting in concrete placement, and cleaning up rubble, debris, and other waste materials. You will also identify and load/offload building materials, machinery, or tools, distributing them to the appropriate locations, and may operate hand and power tools of all types.
Key Responsibilities
- Clean or prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazards
- Erect or dismantle scaffolding, shoring, braces, traffic barricades, ramps, or other temporary structures
- Load, unload, or identify building materials, machinery, or tools, distributing them to the appropriate locations
- Measure, mark, or record openings or distances to layout areas where construction work will be performed
- Tend pumps, compressors, or generators to provide power for tools, machinery, or equipment or to heat or move materials
- Mix, pour, or spread concrete, using portable cement mixers and wheelbarrows
- Control traffic passing near, in, or around work zones
- Dig ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, or compact and level earth to grade specifications, using picks, shovels, pneumatic tampers, or rakes
Essential Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- 1 year of general labor experience
- Proficient with all hand and power small tools
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures
- Must be willing to work safely and follow all company policies
- Knowledge/awareness of safety issues
- Ability to perform duties and operation of tools of the trade in strict compliance with OSHA rules
- Must maintain consistent and punctual attendance
- Provide own transportation to and from worksite
- Work independently with minimal supervision and complete assigned daily tasks
- Must be able to follow directions
- Work well within a team setting
- Ability to interact with both co-workers and clients in a courteous and professional manner
Preferred Qualifications
While not essential, the following qualifications are preferred:
- Previous experience working in a construction environment
- Knowledge of construction methods and materials
- Experience operating heavy equipment or machinery
- Ability to read and understand blueprints and diagrams
- Basic math skills and ability to measure and calculate quantities
Physical Demands
This role requires:
- Lifting/pushing/pulling 50lbs to 100lbs on an occasional basis
- Lifting/pushing/pulling up to 20lbs on a frequent basis
- Ability to bend, squat, crouch, crawl, and kneel
- Ability to climb in a safe manner (climbing includes stairs, scaffolding, ladders, and ramps)
- Performing prolonged standing (2-3 hour intervals)
- Able to work at a variety of levels (ex. waist, eye, above head)
- Must have good balance while working on uneven surfaces and maneuvering obstacles
- Possess sufficient handgrip and coordination to carry and operate tools and equipment
- Ability to utilize personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toes shoes, goggles, respirator, safety harness, safety line, flotation gear, etc.) safely per OSHA standards
Environmental Conditions
This role involves working in a construction site environment, which may include:
- Extreme temperatures (cold and hot)
- Wet and/or humid conditions
- Moving mechanical parts
- Outside weather conditions
- High, precarious places
- Fumes or airborne particles
- Very loud noise levels
