Job Overview
The Supervising Attorney serves as the execution leader and technical anchor of the firm, driving legal strategy, ensuring technical excellence, and overseeing day-to-day case execution across tax controversy and advisory matters. This role enables the Managing Partners to focus on firm growth and high-level advisory while ensuring consistent, high-quality legal delivery and strong team performance.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Case Strategy, Legal Judgment & Technical Oversight _45%_
1. Leading the development and execution of legal strategies across complex tax controversy and advisory matters, ensuring alignment with firm standards and client objectives.
2. Evaluating complex tax positions, risk exposure, and defensibility, making independent judgment calls in high-stakes situations.
3. Reviewing, refining, and approving legal analyses, IRS responses, appeals memoranda, and client deliverables to ensure technical accuracy and completeness.
4. Ensuring all work products is meeting firm standards for defensibility, strategic positioning, and clarity prior to partner involvement.
5. Making real-time decisions on case direction, determining when escalation is necessary and when independent resolution is appropriate.
6. Driving consistency in legal reasoning, argument development, and documentation across all matters.
7. Translating complex tax law and procedural issues into clear, actionable strategies for both internal teams and clients.
8. Maintaining ownership of case outcomes by proactively identifying risks, gaps, and opportunities within active matters.
9. Aligning legal strategy with client goals, timelines, and operational realities to ensure practical and effective execution.
IRS Advocacy, Matter Ownership & Client Execution _30%_
10. Serving as lead or supervising attorney on IRS matters, including audits, IDRs, examinations, and appeals proceedings.
11. Overseeing communications with IRS personnel, ensuring consistency, professionalism, and strategic alignment in all interactions.
12. Driving cases forward proactively by identifying bottlenecks, removing delays, and ensuring timely progression of all matters.
13. Maintaining full visibility over deadlines, filings, procedural posture, and compliance requirements across assigned cases.
14. Coordinating and directing case strategy execution across multiple matters simultaneously, ensuring prioritization aligns with firm and client needs.
15. Ensuring deliverables are being completed on time, within scope, and at the level of quality expected by the firm.
16. Managing client expectations by providing clarity, updates, and strategic guidance throughout the lifecycle of each matter.
17. Strengthening defensibility of all submissions by ensuring proper documentation, support, and alignment with applicable law and procedure.
18. Taking full ownership of matter outcomes by ensuring accountability from initiation through resolution.
Team Leadership, Performance Management & Operational Execution _25%_
19. Supervising Associate Attorneys and case teams by providing ongoing direction, oversight, and accountability on active matters.
20. Coaching team members through real-time feedback, technical guidance, and strategic insight to elevate performance and capability.
21. Reviewing team work product prior to partner involvement, ensuring quality control and minimizing rework.
22. Training team members on IRS procedures, case strategy development, and firm standards to strengthen execution consistency.
23. Acting as the first point of escalation for legal and strategic questions, resolving issues efficiently and effectively.
24. Driving accountability across the team by setting clear expectations, monitoring performance, and addressing gaps proactively.
25. Identifying skill gaps and development opportunities, supporting growth of attorneys into higher-performing contributors.
26. Contributing to the development and refinement of SOPs, workflows, and standardized legal deliverables.
27. Ensuring alignment between legal strategy and operational execution by improving processes that impact efficiency and quality.
28. Strengthening team discipline by reinforcing deadlines, workflows, and execution standards across all matters.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position provides direct supervision to Associate Attorneys and case teams, ensuring quality of work, accountability, and ongoing development aligned with firm standards and expectations.
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:
Supporting firm profitability by ensuring efficient case execution, minimizing rework, maintaining high-quality deliverables, and aligning work effort with client value and billing expectations. Ultimate fiscal authority remains with the Managing Partners
EDUCATION
• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school required
• Significant experience in tax controversy, IRS procedures, and strategic advisory required
CERTIFICATIONS and LICENSES
• Active bar license in good standing required
• LL.M. in Taxation and/or CPA preferred
