CPA Staff Accountant (Physician Division)

Apply Now ✨
CPA Staff Accountant (Physician Division) – Brown Tax Brown Tax is a fast-growing tax advisory and accounting firm built specifically to serve physicians, assembling one of the strongest healthcare-focused CPA/EA teams in the country. This role is opening due to continued growth in our Physician Division. Role Summary We are hiring a CPA Staff Accountant to manage full-service monthly accounting for a defined group of 15 physician clients. We refer to this group as a “pod.” A pod simply means a fixed set of clients that you fully own from an accounting standpoint – it does not mean managing people. This is a senior-level individual contributor role, not a management role. You will not manage staff in this position. The role is designed for a CPA who understands how physician practices truly operate – including payroll pressure, staffing decisions, collections realities, vendor complexity, and owner compensation – and who wants to deliver clean, reliable financials in a structured, sustainable environment. Team Structure & How This Role Fits • You’ll report to an Accounting Manager who reviews your work, is available for questions, and helps with higher-complexity client issues when needed. • Tax planning and tax preparation are handled by our tax team. • Your responsibility is to keep the books accurate, complete, and tax-ready. • You are not expected to design tax strategies. • You will work directly with physician clients for accounting-related questions and clarity, with leadership support when needed. You own the accounting outcomes for your pod, but you are not on an island. What Makes This Role Different • Clear scope. One pod = 15 clients. No random work or surprise client load. • Healthcare-native focus. All clients are self-employed physicians or practice owners with real operational complexity. • High standards. We do not “make the books look right.” We reconcile properly and maintain balance sheets that hold up. • Real operating model. Pod capacity, review structure, and escalation paths are defined so growth does not equal burnout. • No billable-hour treadmill. We measure success by accuracy, timeliness, and responsiveness – not filling timesheets. Compensation & Hours This is a high-trust, senior-level role intentionally designed for sustainability, not a 45-hour grind. • Salary range: $70,000–$85,000 • Typical workload: 30–35 hours per week • Full-time equivalent: approximately $105,000–$140,000 This compensation is intentionally strong given: • the reduced hours, • the focused scope (15 clients), • and the level of ownership and trust in the role. While there will be occasional short peak periods, the pod model is designed so this role operates within the stated hour range on an ongoing basis. Responsibilities For your assigned pod of 15 physician clients, you will: • Own the full monthly accounting cycle. • Perform month-end close, including reconciliations, journal entries, cleanup, and quality checks. • Produce accurate, timely monthly financials (P&L and Balance Sheet). • Communicate directly with physician clients and/or practice leadership to explain results and answer accounting questions. • Identify issues early (cash flow pressure, payroll creep, staffing inefficiencies, vendor spend, margin compression). • Handle day-to-day decisions directly with clients. • Escalate only complex or strategic issues to the Accounting Manager or tax team. • Enforce firm standards and improve systems rather than repeatedly working around broken ones. By approximately 90 days, the expectation is that your pod is closing cleanly, on time, with fewer surprises each month. What We’re Looking ForRequired • CPA license (active and in good standing). • 3+ years of client-facing accounting experience with full monthly close responsibility. • Strong QuickBooks Online experience (or comparable cloud accounting system). • Excellent organization, communication, and follow-through. Strongly preferred (ideal background) • Hands-on exposure to healthcare operations, such as working with: • physician owners, • practice administrators, • office managers, • billing managers, • or revenue cycle teams. • Familiarity with the financial realities of medical practices:payroll intensity, staffing ratios, collections/RCM workflows, vendor management, and owner compensation tradeoffs. • You value flexibility and structure – autonomy matters to you, but so do standards, cadence, and team support. Schedule & Work Environment • Remote role. • Structured team rhythms to avoid isolation: • weekly team touchpoints, • leadership access, • regular review cadence. • Flexible scheduling, with reliable availability during normal business hours for client communication and internal meetings. • Standardized cloud tools (QBO, workflow systems, shared documentation). Growth Path (Optional) This role is designed to stand on its own long-term. As the Physician Division grows, opportunities may include: • expanded pod ownership, • process leadership and training, • and a future move into an Accounting Manager role overseeing multiple pods and staff – if that is something you want. There is no expectation that you must move into management. Who Thrives Here People who thrive at Brown Tax are: • Calm, kind, and emotionally intelligent. • Proud of clean work and high standards. • Comfortable owning outcomes and enforcing structure. • Interested in building something sustainable with good people. How to apply Please include: • Resume. • A 2-3 minute Loom video describing why you’re the right person for this position.
