The Learning Assistant is a classified, non-exempt position Element Education. Under the direct supervision of the Regional Manager and the Educational Facilitator or Instructor, the Learning Assistant supports and promotes the mission, vision, objectives and policies of Element Education. The Learning Assistant assists in supervising the children at all times, ensuring their safety and well-being.
Essential Functions
Support Student Learning
Assist in the supervision of small and large groups of students in a variety of developmentally appropriate activities, including during lunch time, in the classroom, and in the outdoor environment, while being aware of safety factors
Assist in the organization and cleanliness of Montessori learning environments and a daily schedule of developmentally appropriate activities for students that include attention to the development of literacy, mathematical thinking, scientific thinking, artistic and creative expression, physical-motor development, including gross and fine motor skills, social/emotional development, and multicultural experiences
Assist in the observation and documentation as well as the written assessment and evaluation of children's growth and development
Under the direction of the EF or Instructor, assist in preparing classroom materials; assist in ordering instructional supplies and equipment, and in taking classroom inventory; repair and stock materials as directed
Assist the EF or Instructor in creating a classroom culture in which students welcome challenge, demonstrate respect, take ownership for actions, and allows freedom within limits
Assist students with hygiene procedures as necessary; observe and evaluate the health needs of students and advise supervising EF or Instructor
Operate a variety of equipment including, but not limited to, computers, projectors, record/CD players, tape recorders, laminating machines and kitchen appliances
Communicate updates with supervisors and colleagues
Using first-aid as needed
Utilizes positive discipline strategies
Ensure the safety of students including, but not limited to, assisting with conducting emergency drills and cleaning of workspace
SPED Student Support
Provide direct individual and/or small-group instruction to students to target academic goals according to their IEPs
Provide support to students in the group learning environment to target academic, vocational, and behavior goals according to their IEPs
Provide support to students in the group learning environment on curriculum accommodations and to support access to the general education curriculum according to their IEP s
Accountability and General Administration
Model appropriate classroom behavior and respect for others
Attend and participate in all required meetings, trainings, and school functions; Promote and participate in creative exchange of ideas
Comply with all aspects of the safety plan
Observe confidentiality
Return all correspondence, including phone calls and emails, in a timely manner; Be accessible during business hours and respond to administrative needs and inquiries
Public Relations
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
Develop positive relationships with parents and general public associated with the Organization
Communicate and support the school s mission, policies, and procedures
Represent Element Education and its programs in a positive and professional manner
Assist with maintaining a positive and effective work environment; Treat all staff with respect, provide opportunities for participation in decision making, and be responsive to the human needs of staff members

In collaboration with the Regional Manager and supervising EF or Instructor, plan for own career growth and ongoing professional development

Requirements
High School Diploma or Equivalent
Passage of CBEST preferred
Upon Hire/Offer
First Aid/CPR/AED certification
Proof that employee is free of active tuberculosis (i.e. TB risk assessment, TB test, chest X-ray, etc.)
Successful background clearance
FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt
Work Schedule: Determined by School Director; No work during school holidays (as outlined in School Calendar) and one additional week during the Spring
May require travel throughout San Diego County.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to read, speak, see, and hear well enough to communicate by telephone, electronically, in person, and in the classroom. Employee must also regularly be able to write, file, type, and operate a computer, telephone, general office equipment, and classroom equipment. While in the classroom, the employee is also regularly required to extend arm with upper extremities to write on a whiteboard which may require neck rotation to look back at the class. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk throughout the classroom while maneuvering in tight spaces as well as frequently kneel, stoop, or crouch when working with classroom equipment, helping students, etc. A moderate amount of work is completed on electronic mobile and desktop devices. The employee will occasionally sit for an extended period of time which is done at a desk with forward bending from the waist, leaning on forearms, and looking down which requires neck flexion. It is necessary to grasp and manipulate pens, markers, scissors, staplers, etc., occasionally or frequently, depending on the day. Employee might occasionally move materials and classroom furniture to manipulate the classroom layout and be able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. The employee is required to deal with irate members of the public and stressful situations.
The employee must have reliable transportation and be able to attend meetings at various Element Education regions.

This position works in a variety of settings including classrooms and outdoors and may experience heat or cold extremes as well as fumes, odors, and dust. Noise level is moderate to loud.

Eligibility:
Be authorized to work lawfully in the U.S.
Have completed at least two semesters or three quarters of post-secondary course work
Have a GPA of 2.0 or higher
Have not participated in a K-16 Collaborative internship/work experience program before
Agree to have their information shared with their respective colleges and Local Educational Agencies
Undergo and successfully clear a LiveScan background check and Tuberculosis (TB) screening (only after being selected for an internship position)
