Overview:
Reviews and analyzes applications, inspections, endorsements, cancellations, and reinstatements to determine policy eligibility while adhering to underwriting rules and guidelines. Accepts or rejects applications and makes risk selections on behalf of the carrier client within underwriting rules and guidelines. Handles inbound and outbound calls and chats from agents and clients to provide guidance on policy forms, coverage, and underwriting decisions. Processes tasks across new business, inspections, endorsements, cancellations, and reinstatements to ensure timely and accurate workflow completion. Develops and maintains strong agent relationships and acts as a subject matter expert by providing guidance on policy forms, coverage, and departmental processes to both external agents and internal team members.
Description:
Policy Underwriting & Risk Assessment
- Review and process applications for all personal lines coverage to determine eligibility for company programs.
- Analyze applications, inspections, and endorsements to make risk selection decisions within established underwriting rules and guidelines.
- Accept or reject applications and determine coverage, pricing, and endorsements with accuracy and efficiency.
- Process requests for cancellations, reinstatements, and endorsements while adhering to departmental service standards.
- Demonstrate proficiency in 5 or more underwriting functions, including risk evaluation, premium calculation, and policy adjustments.
- Research complex underwriting issues and provide solutions for eligibility, coverage, and compliance concerns.
Agent & Client Support
- Serve as a subject matter expert for agents by providing guidance on policy forms, coverage options, and application submission.
- Receive and handle agent calls regarding bind requests, endorsement changes, cancellations, reinstatements, inspections, missing information, and quote acceptability.
- Maintain strong agent relationships through proactive communication and timely resolution of inquiries.
Follow-Up & Workflow Management
- Ensure timely and accurate processing of tasks to support departmental and client needs.
- Maintain organized workflow to optimize productivity and compliance with underwriting standards.
Continuous Learning & Compliance
- Stay current on underwriting rules, policy forms, industry trends, and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in training sessions and cross-functional initiatives as needed.
- Ensure compliance with carrier and company guidelines in all underwriting decisions.
- Recommend process improvements to enhance underwriting quality and efficiency.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university preferred.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of underwriting experience in Personal Lines including homeowners and other lines; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- Must have general knowledge of insurance statutes, regulations and policies.
Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of Property/Casualty insurance underwriting principles and personal lines policy elements.
- Ability to analyze complex applications and make informed risk decisions.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational, time management, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize workload, and maintain high accuracy.
- Customer service and conflict-resolution skills, including handling agent or client inquiries professionally.
- An active 2-20 or 4-40 license, or industry designation such as CPCU or CIC, is preferred.
- Participation in virtual team meetings, training sessions, and performance reviews.
- Must be self-motivated, organized, and able to maintain productivity without direct supervision.
Working Conditions:
- Position is fully remote; employee is expected to maintain a dedicated, distraction-free workspace.
- Employee is responsible for providing a reliable internet connection that meets minimum speed requirements.
- Use of a company-provided computer, headset, and other necessary equipment is required.
- Work schedule may include standard business hours; flexibility may be required to meet peak call/chat volumes.
- Ability to manage multiple communication channels (calls, chats, task systems) efficiently from home.
- Must adhere to data security and confidentiality standards while handling sensitive client and policy information.
- Participation in virtual team meetings, training sessions, and performance reviews.
- Must be self-motivated, organized, and able to maintain productivity without direct supervision.
